About Land of Spirit
Land of Spirit, Franklin County's Folk Life Play is in its third year of operation. The first show, The Last Hard Times, was held in 2008 with Gas Sugar Nylons and Chocolate Bars as the 2009 production. The ALL NEW 2010 show has not yet gotten its name, but after the public reading in February 2010 the title will be forthcoming. Plays are based on real, true life stories from those who grew up or have lived in Franklin and surrounding counties of Northeast Georgia.
Local volunteers play an important part in the production of the folk life play. They first gather stories from local people in the area; the stories are transcribed by Ginger Dixon and Vivian Young and then sent to Jules Corriere, Playwright. Following the writing of the play, public readings are held for community input. Then, auditions are held and actors selected from volunteer community citizens. Age range for the 80+ actors in each of the first two productions has been from age 4 to 92 and they rehearse for six weeks prior to the opening of a show. There has been an incredible amount of local talent that has emerged to produce the first two, very successful, plays.
Community Performance, Inc., a professional community theater group, is hired to write and direct the play; and, for set and lighting design, and choreography. Professional artists include: Jules Corriere, Playwright and Co-Director; Dr. Richard Geer, Artistic Co-Director; Brackley Frayer, Lighting Design; Joe Varga, Set Design; and, Kevin Iega Jeff, Choreography. Ms. Corriere and Dr. Geer are in residence for 6 weeks and the remaining staff is here for one week each. Another important CPI member is local composer Heather McCluskey. Heather writes a minimum of four original songs for each production and is composer of the Land of Spirit Theme Song.
Another 50+ volunteer citizens work in: concessions; ticket sales; vehicle parking; costumes; make up and hair styling; acquisition or construction of props; and numerous other duties that it takes to put on a production of this magnitude.
